Al Michaels Recaps the Olympics – But Is It Really Him?
Plus, why a Police Chief pursued digital asset certification
Ric Edelman: It's Wednesday, August 7th. Have you been watching the Olympics? Well then, listen to this:
Al Michaels: Welcome to your Daily Olympic Recap, your personal rundown of yesterday's most thrilling Olympic moments. Since you're a swimming fan, let's head right to the pool. Team USA secured a stunning victory in the men's four by 100-meter medley relay, smashing the world record over at the diving venue. Krysta Palmer showcased resilience and skill, overcoming past knee surgeries to qualify for the women's springboard final. Meanwhile, a tough break for Canada's Pamela Ware as a failed final dive scored zero, ending her bid for the final. Check out these highlights from yesterday's action.
Ric Edelman: Yes, that's the voice of Al Michaels, but it's not Al Michaels. Yes, he's a correspondent for NBC's Summer Olympics coverage, but he's not actually working. He licensed his voice to NBC. So while you've heard him plenty of times on Super Bowls and World Series and that, Do You Believe in Miracles, riff at the Lake Placid Winter Olympics back in 1980, you now get Al Michaels every day during the Olympics giving you a daily summary of the games, but it's not really him. Al Michaels is now 79 years old and he's now immortal. Will NBC use him for generations to come? Why not? And why stop there? Let's bring back Howard Cosell, and Jim McKay, and Chris Schenkel, and how about Pat Summerall, and John Madden? Every time NBC airs Al Michaels, they open with a disclosure that it's AI generated. But will they do that forever? Will anyone care? What if AI Al says something that real Al doesn't like? Can he sue? What rights does he have? What rights do you have as a viewer and listener? But this trend is inevitable and unstoppable. Whatever NBC is paying Al Michaels, it's less than what they pay to have him really do the work. And they avoid paying for his airfare, his hotel, and meals. They don't have to worry that he'll get sick, or not show up, or say or do something inappropriate, either on the air or off. AI doing what humans used to do. And to get you to be okay with this, the AI will impersonate your favorite humans.
Next up, robots that look, act, and sound like your favorite celebrity, imitating them perfectly. Welcome back, Elvis! And yes, you'll not only find them on stage and in the workplace, they'll be available to perform in your bedroom, too. What do you think of that, Al?
Al Michaels: Yes, great. I like it.
Ric Edelman: Next I want to share with you an email that I received yesterday from Robert Almada, the Chief of Police of the Lacey Police Department in Lacey, Washington. That's next. Stay with us for more here on The Truth About Your Future.

Ric Edelman: Here's the email I received from Robert Almada. And yes, the voice is AI generated:
Chief Robert: Hi, Ric. I completed my DACFP Student Track Certification this past weekend. Thank you for the quality training opportunity. I posted my certification to my LinkedIn account and posted the following and wanted to share it with you. As a Chief of Police, I made the choice to pursue a Certificate in Blockchain and Digital Assets. Why? Two key reasons. A dedication to lifelong learning and a commitment to embracing the future. It's crucial not to become complacent and remain within our comfort zones. The distributed ledger technology is a game changer, and it's vital not to overlook the new reality of crypto assets. Learning about the distributed ledger technology and understanding the workings of blockchain and crypto assets required me to adapt to a new language. This shift is essential to comprehend why bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are not the perceived threats some make them out to be. Reflecting on the impact of previous technological advancements like PCs and emails in law enforcement, it's evident that AI, distributed ledger tech, and crypto assets will bring even more disruption and unforeseen opportunities. To all aspiring leaders, I encourage you to stay active, keep learning, and be ready to embrace the future. Our folks in our communities are relying on us to lead the way. Thank you, Ric, for all you do. Your impacts are felt far beyond the financial management and planning space. All the best, Chief Robert Almada, Lacey Police Department, Lacey, Washington.
Ric Edelman: Thank you, Chief Almada. Thank you for your service to your community and for your leadership. I'm honored to be your resource for crypto education. And if you'd like to learn more about our CBDA program, the Certified in Blockchain and Digital Assets, professional designation, the course that chief Almada just completed – the link to that is in the show notes.
