An Analysis of the Vice-Presidential Candidates
Do they make any difference in how you'll vote?
Ric Edelman: It's Wednesday, October 30th. We've been presenting 34 topics in 19 podcasts all this month, and today we're at our final one. Today, the Vice President. I've received a few emails from folks, regarding the selection of VP, and let me share them with you.
There are only four. First, from Ken.
Ken: “If one of the VPs had to take over as president, I can't imagine a President Walz, but I can imagine a President Vance.”
Ric Edelman: Here's the e-mail I received from Mark.
Mark: “Kamala Harris chose Governor Walz to be her running mate, and he is another far left progressive like her. He has said that there is no right to publish or speak what the government considers to be misinformation or disinformation, which amounts to no First Amendment. He delayed taking action to stop the rioting, looting, and burning of buildings in Minneapolis during the George Floyd riots.”
Ric Edelman: Anthony from Florida wrote to me.
Anthony: “Walz is a proven progressive leftist. He was chosen by Harris because he represents her same values.”
Ric Edelman: And finally, here's from Martha. She's in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Martha: “Vance as next in line should something happen to Trump? That's even scarier than Trump.”
Ric Edelman: So, what I'm discovering is that the overall attitude about Tim Walz and J.D. Vance mirrors pretty closely, the viewpoints people have about Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, which I guess is no surprise.
I want to share with you my take on the VP selections and this transcends a little bit what I think what some folks have been focusing on. I take this a little personally because I'm an author, as you know. I’ve written 13 books. I’m a New York Times number one bestseller.
I've got a big problem with plagiarism and, and along the same lines, I've got a big problem with embellishment, which I think is, you know, plagiarism is the ultimate embellishment. Making claims about yourself that just aren't true, so that people can think highly of you. In fact, embellishment's really a euphemism. A more accurate word is liar. And Tim Walz has demonstrated that he's a liar. Worse, he's a repetitive liar. It's one thing to lie, it's worse when you persist in repeating the lie.
And it gets even worse still when you lie about many things. And worst of all, when you refuse to admit that you've been lying. This is a really significant character flaw. Tim Walz lied when he said he served in combat. He lied when he said he was in Tiananmen Square during the protests in 1989. He lied when he said his daughter was conceived through IVF.
And when he was challenged on each of these lies, he said he misspoke, and then he made the same lying assertions he'd made before. He's tried to just dismiss all this. At one point he said he didn't want to get caught up in the rhetoric. Another time he called himself a knucklehead. Do we really want to have as vice president, potentially president, someone who admits they're a knucklehead. But as, annoying as all that is, as frankly, astonishing at the immaturity of all that is, frankly, given all the lies that Donald Trump has told, it's hard to just write Tim Walz off.
So, we need to look at his record, get past this and look at his record. And also of course, that of J.D. Vance. And with both of them, you get what you get with Trump and Harris. Walz is a far left-wing progressive. He's even more liberal than Kamala is. He supports workers, not business. For example, he signed a law giving workers 90% of their pay for 12 weeks when they have a baby or to care for a sick family member, plus an additional 12 weeks off if they themselves have a serious illness.
Walz also supports abortion and LGBTQ rights. He signed a bill into law that gives free breakfast and lunch for all school students, regardless of their family income. He also gives free college tuition and fees for households earning less than $80,000 a year.
He gives every household $1,750 for every child under 18 that they have, plus tax credits to households so they can pay for K-12 education expenses. He also gave up to $1,300 to retirees, students, workers, and middle-class families. He eliminated state taxes on Social Security for more than three quarters of the retirees in the state of Minnesota.
And he allowed undocumented immigrants to get a driver's license, as well as state-paid health insurance and free college tuition. This is all a very progressive, liberal agenda. Kinda fits with Kamala Harris's viewpoint, which makes sense. That's why she picked him.
And to pay for all of this, Tim Walz as governor raised taxes in the state of Minnesota by $3 billion. He imposed a new, big tax increase on corporations, a big increase in the sales tax and an increase in the gasoline tax. The result of all that, Minnesota's economy grew just 1.6% last year. Compared to 2.9% for the rest of the country on average. Oh, and by the way, just like Kamala, he doesn't fully support Israel.
Like I said, with Walz, you get a lot of Harris, even more extreme than Harris in some cases.
The same, in reverse, can be said about J.D. Vance. He's a mini-Trump. Vance is anti-abortion. This year he voted against in vitro fertilization. He opposes same-sex marriage and gender affirming care for minors. Vance is pro-gun, anti-immigrant, big on the economy, low taxes, and also low on protecting the environment. Or LGBTQ for that matter.
So, the bottom line: If you like Harris, you gotta love Walz. And if you like Trump, you gotta love Vance. Personally, as much as I don't like either Harris or Trump, I therefore don't really love Vance or Walz.
So, I'll go back to my ethical concern. Walz seems to have a bunch of ethical problems when it comes to telling the truth about himself. That's a big ding on him. But, frankly, I gotta say, it's not enough to make a difference in who I choose for president, compared to say, John McCain with his disastrous choice of Sarah Palin, or Ross Perot's horrifying pick of James Stockdale.
I'm ending this conversation on VP where I started, undecided.
So, who do you think I'm going to vote for, now that we have gone through all 19 of these podcasts, all 34 of these topics? I've laid out for you what I view as the important issues regarding each of these topics and my viewpoint on how I feel about Trump's position or Harris's position on each of them.
Who do you think I'm going to choose for president? Send me your thoughts today, to AskRic@TheTruthAYF.com. The link is in the show notes.
Use the Excel spreadsheet I've provided to you all this month to weigh in yourself if you are like me among the undecideds. Because I do have to make a decision, and I'm going to share with you tomorrow, what that decision is.
And by the way, of all the emails I've received regarding their choice of president, only one person has said their choice for president is me. That kind of says it all. Tomorrow, my summary of these 34 topics and 19 podcasts.
