Bad News and Good News for Fat Americans
Revolution coming for health and wealth
Ric Edelman: It's Monday, November 25th, and I have bad news and good news for you. The bad news is that three quarters of U. S. adults are now either overweight or outright obese. That's a 50% increase since 1990, according to a new study. Not only are more people becoming fat, people are becoming fat at younger ages than ever before.
One in three children are now fat. Oh, and yeah, I'm told it's politically incorrect to use the word fat. Well, too bad. I'm pretty much fed up with people wordsmithing the truth to make harsh realities seem less harsh. We used to have a Welfare Department. Now we call it the Department of Health and Human Services. I guess it makes you feel better when you get a government handout.
Maybe you think it's more acceptable to say you're overweight. Maybe you can be more tolerant of yourself being overweight instead of fat. But I think we need to be blunt. If you're fat, you have a far higher risk of high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease, heart attack, and stroke, sleep apnea, infertility, cancer, and more mental health problems.
And all of that adds up to the likelihood that you're going to have a shortened life expectancy. Shortened life expectancy? That's wordsmithing too. Let me say it another way. If you're fat, you're going to die. And you're going to die a lot sooner, and in a lot more discomfort, sorry, pain, than if you weren't fat.
You don't believe me? Go visit an over-55 community. You know what you're not going to see there? Fat people! They've all died long before they got to their 60s or 70s or 80s. This is not only a major health crisis for all the fat people, it's a major economic crisis for all taxpaying people. One study says that fat people are causing our health care system to spend more than $9 trillion in excess medical expenditures over the next 10 years.
And since Medicare and Medicaid pay most of the costs for health care in this country, that means taxpayers are paying for that $9 trillion dollar. That's about $100,000 per household. Thanks, but I really don't feel like spending $100,000 so you can scarf down potato chips and vanilla milkshakes every day.
But here's the good news. We now have amazing new drugs. Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound. We don't know their long-term side effects yet, but so far so good. They let you lose 10% or 20% of your weight within just a couple of months. Amazing! These drugs are gonna change the world. They're not only gonna cure obesity, there are more and more uses for these drugs being discovered all the time, and they're going to improve the lives of billions of people all around the world.
You have to remember, these drugs were created to fight diabetes, and then doctors noticed that all their diabetes patients were losing weight. Then they notice that the people taking these drugs to lose weight are getting improvements with cardiovascular illnesses and kidney disease. Now, the doctors are even looking at how these drugs fight Alzheimer's and drug addictions and all that might be just the beginning.
These drugs could be among the most successful medical breakthroughs in history. Already the companies that make these drugs are fabulously successful. Novo Nordisk, which makes two of them, is now the most valuable company in all of Europe. Eli Lilly makes one of them and it's been the best performing stock on Wall Street.
In just a few years, these two companies alone have added a trillion dollars to their market caps. It's easy to see why investors are so enthusiastic. Morgan Stanley says that nearly 10% of all Americans are going to be taking one of these drugs within 10 years. There are cheap versions already available for $99 a month, and they're only going to get cheaper.
And as they do, and as their uses expand, we're talking a huge impact for industry, for the economy, and for society. And remember, being fat isn't just a U. S. thing, although we do lead the world in the number of people who are overweight or obese, but so is 40% of all the people in the world. With these drugs, we can beat heart disease, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer's, kidney disease. These are all among the top 10 causes of death in the world. 100, 000 Americans die every year from opioid overdoses. Another 180, 000 die from alcohol. And it looks like these drugs can end those addictions.
Forget about the health benefits, which are amazing. You're not only gonna live longer, you're gonna feel better too. But forget that, look at the financial benefits. Massive savings in healthcare costs. We're gonna see a rise in physical fitness. More purchases of sportswear and gym memberships. And everybody who loses 20% percent of their weight They got to buy entirely new wardrobes.
You can also expect higher sales of cosmetics and hairstyling as people look to show off their new looks. Hell, one study says the aviation industry is going to make more money because if the average passenger loses 10 pounds, airlines will save $80 million a year in fuel costs.
There are going to be losers as a result of this new tech. Like the food industry, because people are going to sharply reduce their consumption of high fat, sweet, and salty food products. So, we're just at the beginning, and all this is going to get really exciting. And not just for these new few drug companies. It's hard to see where these benefits are going to end, and the rising tide will lift most of the economy worldwide, while helping billions of people live healthier. And happier and longer lives.
