Forget Medicine – This is the Key to Improving Your Health and Quality of Life
All you need is a mirror
Ric Edelman: It's Tuesday, September 17th. Since 2000, there's been a 50 percent increase in the number of people dying or getting seriously ill from conditions due to high blood pressure and obesity. High blood sugar and fat levels have caused a surge in heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. And this is even hitting people ages 15 to 49.
This is all due to the fact that we are eating too much. We are drinking too much. We are smoking too much. And so, we need to recognize that our lifestyle, our diets, are contributing to the bad health we've got, and that'll translate into shortened life expectancy. But here's something that is really interesting; Athletic Brewing, which is a big beer manufacturer, is now valued at $800 million. They have doubled in value in the past two years. And here's the thing, Athletic Brewing manufactures non-alcoholic beer. They are now the number one non-alcoholic beer in the US, ahead of Budweiser and Heineken.
Yeah, we are all cutting back on our alcohol consumption and the age cohort that's drinking the least is younger Americans. They are less likely to consume alcohol than their parents and grandparents. And non-alcoholic beer is the fastest growing segment of the beer market. Although I'm a huge fan of Zero Zero Beer, you know, 0.0 percent alcohol, I'm not a fan of Athletic IPAs. Everybody else is, they're all the rage, but I'm just not a fan.
Anyway, what we need to recognize is that if you want to extend not only your lifespan, but your health span, meaning the number of years you're not merely alive, but the number of years you're healthy and alive, you just need to do a few things. And you know what they are.
You need to exercise a few times a week, you need to have a good diet, don't smoke, have limited...or better yet, no alcohol, avoid stress, get plenty of sleep- eight hours a night - and have and maintain good relationships. There have been several studies that are all demonstrating you don't need a lot of drugs, you don't need a lot of medical intervention. All you need to is adopt a healthy lifestyle. In a study of 14,000 men and women all who are age 50 at the beginning of the study, those who drank little and who were not obese lived, on average, seven years longer than people who did drink or who were obese. And six years out of those seven years, these folks were mostly free of health issues.
There was another study of two million adults and found how important relationships are. Social isolation raises the risk of death by 32%. People in good relationships not only lived longer, they had better health while they were alive.
And people are getting this. You know, they're recognizing, I really need to pay attention to not only how long am I living, but how good is my life from a health perspective. So, we know how common it is for people to get new knees and new hips. But guess what the fastest growing age group is for this surgery? Adults, in their 40s. People are recognizing that they've done damage to their knees in their 20s and 30s from athletics and so on, and that they know that they're going to need new knees and hips in their future. But why wait until you're in your 60s or 70s tolerating decades of pain and limited mobility?
People in their 40s are saying, the heck with that, I'm going to get that new knee or new hip right now. And so what if I need another one 25 years from now. But this way they go back on the ski slopes, they go back on the tennis court, and best of all, they're pain free.
You know, obesity is indeed a big deal. 40 percent of US adults are obese. That's up by a third since the turn of the century and all that extra weight, well, that adds pressure to your joints, and that means you're going to increase the need for new knees and new hips. Instead of just having the surgery, lose weight. If you lose weight, you'll reduce the pressure on your hips and your knees and eliminate the need, perhaps, of needing that surgery.
Oh, and by the way, they're making incredible advances when you do need that surgery. Robotic assistance, custom fitted 3D printed prosthetics, advances in physical therapy, anesthesia, and pain meds, it all translates into shorter patient recovery times.
The old days, you would have the surgery, lie in bed for a week before they'd let you out. Now, you're up and walking within a couple of hours of having the surgery. It's really rather remarkable. So yeah, you can expect to be living longer than you thought. And if you get it done right, you'll be living healthier too. The choice is yours.
Hey, I mentioned to you yesterday and I want to mention it again. We've got a webinar coming up Friday, September 20th, at 1 PM ET.
