Meet The Future Billionaires
What makes Gen Z's financial future so promising
Ric Edelman: It's Monday, June 3rd. On today's show, guess who's really getting rich? We all know that most of the money in this country is owned by the Baby Boomers. That's not a surprise. The older generation is always the richest simply because they've been around the longest. They're at the peak of their careers. They're earning the most. They've been saving the longest, so they've accumulated the most as well. But here's the interesting thing. Gen Z is doing a lot better than the Baby Boomers were at their age. That means we can expect that when they get older, the Gen Z generation will by far be the wealthiest generation in human history.
If you're Gen Z, you were born between 1997 and 2012. About half of you have a job. For the first time, there are about to be more Gen Zers in the workforce than Baby Boomers. There are also 6,000 Zoomers CEOs and 1,000 Zoomers in public office. Zoomers are more likely to be homeowners than Millennials were at their age, but their attitudes are different from their elders.
Zoomers believe that they have Zoomers believe that having a job is basically a right. They have no loyalty to their employers. They boast about quiet quitting, a philosophy, where they put in just enough effort not to be fired. They also talk about Bear Minimum Monday and snailing. where they do work slowly.
Gen Zers spend 25% less time on work and work-related activities than the prior generation, and they don't believe that work is a central part of their lives. So no wonder they're not entrepreneurial. There aren't any Gen Zers on the Forbes list of billionaires, and they're filing fewer patents than their elders did at their age.
They're also creating fewer popular songs. In 2008, 42% of music was from Millennials. Gen Zers made only 29% of those hits this year. So if you're one of the Boomers, you might be tempted to criticize the Zoomers. But I suggest you reconsider. For one thing, the Zoomers are going to be taking over as us Boomers step aside.
They will increasingly be the leaders in business and in government. So like them or not, they are the power group that cannot be ignored. And second, those Zoomers just might be right. Us Boomers are the ones who never had a work life balance. Maybe the Gen Z folks have it right in realizing there's more to life than money.
There's more to life than work. Maybe we can learn a thing or two from them. And if you're a financial advisor who wants to stay in business, you're gonna have to learn what makes Zoomers tick if you want to have any hopes of having any of them as your client.
