The Art of Falling
How older adults can minimize the risk of injury
Ric Edelman: It's Monday, February 26th. Are you over the age of 65? Well, if so, I've got a scary statistic for you. One third of us who are 65+ fall down at least once a year, and 5% of these falls result in a broken bone. And by the way, if you do fall down, you're 2 to 3 times more likely to fall down again. Hey, you want to ruin your quality of life? Fall down. People who fall become scared to leave their home. They become less social. That makes you isolated. And that leads to depression. And because you're sedentary, you lose muscle.
So you need to learn how to fall. Go take a judo class to learn how. You need to learn how to fall backwards and sideways, not just forward. Here's one big tip: don't try to break your fall by extending your hands. All you'll do is break your wrist. You also want to tuck your chin to your chest to protect your head, and put yourself into a ball and roll to your side as you hit the ground.
If it sounds weird that you as an adult should learn how to fall, well, think about it. As a kid you learned how to swim, right? That was to protect you from drowning. Well, this is the same thing. Kids needed to learn how to swim to protect themselves. You, as an adult need to learn how to fall to protect yourself. Learn how to fall.
